Michigan Expands Trail Access for E-Bikes

Freedom on Two Wheels

Michigan’s scenic trails have always been a draw for outdoor lovers, but until now, e-bike riders often found themselves limited by outdated rules. Thanks to a new policy from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), those days are changing — opening the door to more freedom, adventure, and accessibility on two wheels.

A Look Back: E-Bike Rules in Michigan

Before 2017, there was a lot of confusion around where e-bikes were allowed in Michigan. The introduction of Public Act 138 helped by defining e-bikes into three classes, but restrictions still lingered, especially on multi-use and natural-surface trails.

Class 3 e-bikes were mostly barred from non-motorized trails, while even Class 1 and 2 bikes faced barriers, depending on the trail and local regulations.

New Rules, More Access

Fast forward to August 2024, and the DNR’s updated Land Use Order has officially cleared the way for broader e-bike access. Under this new guidance:

  • Class 1 e-bikes are now allowed on paved trails, gravel pathways, and most natural-surface non-motorized trails in Michigan’s state parks, recreation areas, and forests.
  • Class 2 e-bikes can also access many of these same trails, depending on local ordinances.
  • Class 3 e-bikes remain limited to roads and certain bike-friendly routes, where regular bicycles are permitted.

This change recognizes the role of e-bikes as an eco-friendly, inclusive option for getting outdoors — and it’s already opening new possibilities for riders of all ages and abilities.

Why It Matters

The expanded access is more than just a win for cycling enthusiasts. It encourages people to choose e-bikes over cars for trail access, reducing emissions and easing congestion in park areas. It also gives older adults, people with mobility challenges, and casual riders a new way to enjoy Michigan’s scenic landscapes — without the barriers that used to stand in their way.
